Owning a boat is an incredible adventure, but it also comes with a bit of a learning curve. If you are new to boating, these tips from North Florida Yacht Sales will help you get started! If you’re still in the market for a boat, come shop with us in Jacksonville, FL. We have a wide selection of new and pre-owned boats for sale, and we welcome customers from Palm Coast and Lakeside.
Get Insured
After purchasing a new boat, your first priority is to get it insured. While boat insurance is not a legal requirement in Florida, it is highly recommended! Your boat is probably one of your most valuable assets, after all, and it should be protected against damage and theft. If your boat will be transported via trailer, you should think about getting your trailer insured, too.
Stock Up on Safety Equipment
Before taking your new boat on its maiden voyage, make sure it’s equipped with all the necessary safety gear. The bare essentials include a first-aid kit, signal flares, a VHF radio, and a fire extinguisher. Of course, you should also have enough personal flotation devices (PFDs) for everyone on your boat.
Learn the Ropes
Ready to start practicing? We recommend heading to the boat ramp during the early morning hours. This will ensure the waterway isn’t too crowded, so you will have plenty of breathing room to feel comfortable as you learn how to operate your new boat.
Make sure to read the operating manual from cover to cover, and follow the instructions carefully. Practice turning and braking at different speeds, and test all the features of your new boat to ensure everything is in good working order.
